Alphabet Soup Activity
Sorting games are so much fun especially for toddlers and preschoolers.
Not only are they gaining benefits (hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, pincer grasp skills and more..) but they are also learning by playing!
This activity can be used for learning in a couple of different ways!
One way we went about this activity is to fill each bowl of soup with alphabet magnet letters (AKA alphabet letter soup)!
Magnetic letter play can be so much fun and when added into a fun play to learn activity such as this one that included sorting games, the results for learning are amazing!
So, how did we go about this simple magnetic letters activity?
The goal of the game was so collect magnet letters, call each letter sound out, and add them to their correct colored bowl – in turn, a fun alphabet soup activity for toddlers and for kids!
Easy peasy, right?
Not only will this activity work for toddlers but it can work for preschoolers, kindergarteners and for older kids.
But, how?
Well, because toddlers can practice sorting by colors only.
Preschoolers can practice letter sounds.
Kindergarteners can practice a consonant with a vowel with the right setup.
Older kids can practice sight words with the right setup as well!
What does the right setup mean?
It means according to how you set your activity up, (sight words cards, picking and choosing the right letter magnets to display a consonant and a vowel…) you can achieve a great activity that works for a differentiated set of ages!
Neat!
So, with this simple alphabet soup activity my LO not only worked on her letter sounds but she also sorted by colors too!
Alphabetical order in word activities can also work and are a fun play to learn activity as well.
Magnetic letters with board
Do you have a letter board?
Another fun way to go about bringing forth a fun letters activity is to use a magnetic letters board.
This will in turn allow for a fun game of alphabetical sorting with magnetic play too!
For example, maybe bringing forth the letter A to the magnetic board will allow for the learning of the letter sound A.
Then, bring the next vowel, the letter E and then the letter I and so on and so forth until you’ve reached a completion of vowel alphabetical order for kids.
Learning vowel sounds is key to pre-reading skills and you can read more about this on my, “How I taught my kindergartener to read post”.
